New Research Reveals the UK Cities Most Vulnerable to Extreme Heat
A new study has identified the British cities most vulnerable to extreme heat, highlighting how rising temperatures are changing the way we need to think about comfort in our homes and workplaces.
The research, carried out using data from Ordnance Survey, the Met Office and climate intelligence specialists, ranked Portsmouth as the UK city currently most vulnerable to extreme heat. Westminster, Plymouth, Leicester and Exeter were also among the highest-risk locations. The study assessed 71 cities across England, Scotland and Wales and warned that every city examined could face high heat vulnerability by 2040. Read the news report.

Why Are Some Areas More Vulnerable?
Cities and densely populated towns can become considerably warmer than surrounding rural areas. Buildings, roads and paved surfaces absorb heat throughout the day before releasing it slowly during the evening. This is known as the “urban heat island” effect.
Limited tree cover, fewer green spaces and a lack of natural shade can make the problem worse. Modern homes can also retain considerable amounts of heat, particularly properties with large windows, high levels of insulation or rooms directly beneath the roof.
For residents across Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Southampton, Plymouth, Exeter and other southern areas, increasingly warm summers are making indoor temperature control a more important consideration.
Air Conditioning Is Becoming a Practical Home Improvement
Air conditioning was once considered an occasional luxury in the UK. However, longer periods of warm weather and uncomfortable overnight temperatures mean that more homeowners are now viewing it as a practical, long-term improvement.
A professionally designed system can:
- Maintain a comfortable indoor temperature during hot weather
- Make bedrooms more comfortable for sleeping
- Help regulate warm loft conversions, conservatories and home offices
- Provide targeted temperature control in the rooms used most often
- Deliver efficient heating during colder months

Preparing Before the Next Heatwave
Demand for air-conditioning installations naturally rises when temperatures increase. By planning during autumn, winter or early spring, homeowners have more time to consider where units should be positioned, which rooms require temperature control and what type of system will best suit the property.
Every home is different. A bedroom may only require a single wall-mounted unit, while a larger property could benefit from a multi-split system capable of controlling several rooms independently. The correct system should be selected according to room size, layout, insulation, glazing and how the space is normally used.
Good system design is just as important as the equipment itself. An appropriately sized and carefully positioned unit will provide better comfort, operate more efficiently and complement the appearance of the room.
Keeping Your Property Comfortable All Year Round
This latest research is another indication that overheating is becoming a genuine consideration for British homes and businesses. While improved shading, ventilation and planting can all help, they may not always provide enough relief during prolonged periods of high temperatures.
